Business-Englisch: Was Sie zu jemandem sagen können, der Millionen verloren hat
|
A Business English Today reader wrote in with a problem. A member of the supervisory board of her company was in the news because he was responsible for his firm losing a huge amount of money in the financial crisis. She wonders how to approach him next time she sees him.
Does she send him a card, phone him, send an email commiserating with him? Or does she just say nothing when she meets him at the next board meeting?
In the old days, losing money was a disgrace. But in today’s situation, it has become socially acceptable.
You may wonder about the moral of this, especially when people’s jobs are at risk! But you still should not treat the person like a criminal, and you needn’t feel embarrassed.
Here are some suggestions form Business English Today, for what you could say: |
- I’m so glad to see you today. You must have a lot on your mind, so it’s really nice that you’re here.
- Thanks for coming. I gather you have one or two things going on at the moment. Then all you can do is hope that he or she has the good grace to laugh.
